This was a particularly difficult restoration, not because of the amount of work needed on the photograph itself, but the format of the original photograph. The original was a 16x20, very fragile board-like print, circa 1890.

We first had a 4x5 film negative made of the original. That negative was scanned on a drum scanner to create the "Before" image you see above.  The negative and original was then returned with the original to the owner before we started the restoration.

The client preferred a full rectangular print and the original was an oval vignette. In addition to repairing all the chipped spots, we had to recreate the missing lower part of the image.

Cost of  this restoration was:

  • $35 for the 4x5 negative
  • $10 for the scan of the negative
  • $55 for the restoration itself
